A few years ago, Toyota and BMW signed an agreement to build a new sports car package. The two will later prove to be the 2018 Toyota Supra and the 2018 BMW Z5. The latter should be the first of two cars to be launched. Unlike the Supra, the 2018 BMW Z5 will be a two seater convertible and will not be equipped with a hardtop. Instead, it seems that BMW is only offering the BMW Z5 as a soft top, but we’ll talk about it later. This time, the 2018 BMW Z5 will be built on a new platform to share very little with other BMW cars. Although this is not official, it seems that BMW uses large amounts of aluminum and little high strength steel. Some compounds may also be used in your suspension system to minimize unsprung weight.
Exterior and Interior
As for the style, it seems to have a much larger double kidney grid which is located lower in the fascia. The lower nose and wider grille should offer a more aggressive stance. The headlights also seem to be bigger and, according to the latest BMW design updates, they should be connected to the chrome frame of the grille. The front bumper is well camouflaged, but it is very likely that it has a three piece exit configuration with a wider center opening. Our version of the 2018 BMW Z5 includes all of the above, and if the roadster turns out to be close to our artist’s vision, it will be a sexy Bimmer. On the side, the 2018 BMW Z5 seems to have a less muscular attitude. The front and rear fenders have a flatter appearance and give the roadster a line of size almost without particularity. However, I will wait for the roadster to lose its camouflage to reach a conclusion. The rear fascia of the prototype offers even fewer clues. The rear production lights are not lit on the vehicle, while the bumper features are well concealed under a thick envelope. However, the boot lid looks a lot like the Z4 and comes with a built in spoiler, while the license plate recess has moved up the dashboard.
As you can see in the previous interior, the new 2018 BMW Z5 is shaking an interior that is a mix of old and new. The sports and instruments panel and the floating information and entertainment screen look very much like the BWM 3 2016 Series. Under this floating screen you’ll find a pair of HVAC aspirations and somewhat outdated audio controls. These can be decoys like the front fairing or the BMW lens of mixing old and new. Another thing I would like to emphasize is the steering wheel. Unlike the new 3 Series, the steering wheel seems to have a fairly wide median line, similar to that of the older Ford and GM vehicles compared to the sportier units of the new Bimmer vehicles. This will probably change when the car is ready for production. However, a label covering the emblem of the wheel, so it is very possible that it is the wheel of production. Unfortunately, that’s all we can do, but it’s pretty good at the moment. We are lucky to see the inside with the upper part still in place and that’s why we are grateful. Obviously, BMW still has problems to solve, because it is visible that the instrument cluster has warning lights and a main emblem is displayed with some German annotations under the two main indicators. It is difficult to know with certainty, but it seems that the group of instruments could be digital, which would be a good challenge. In addition, we can not distinguish the size of the infotainment screen, but depending on the fabric that covers it, it looks like it will be as large, if not larger than the screen of the new series 3.
The engine options are still unknown, but considering BMW’s recent strategy, the base model must have a four cylinder turbo under the hood. The same unit will probably be available with a higher output in a high end version, while an online version of 3 liters should motivate the high end variant. A high performance M version could also be developed, but it will not be covered until 2018. According to some reports, BMW could also add a hybrid to the range, and some claim that the Germans might choose not to differentiate the 2018 BMW Z5 from his brother Toyota, which will likely go through the hybrid route, such a transmission is more than likely given the current strategy of the company. The powertrain will be installed in a new sports car architecture developed jointly with Toyota. But even if they share components, each platform will be different and BMW should offer a sportier experience. Transmission options should include automatic dual clutch and manual transmissions. In addition, the 2018 BMW Z5 could benefit from the optional all wheel drive.
Price and Release Date
The car has already been seen several times and it does not look so special, at least in camouflage. Nevertheless, there are people who say interesting things about it, most of which prove it. For starters, the new platform using the 2018 BMW Z5 has a very short wheelbase. It is considerably shorter than the Z4 and this is pretty clear when you see the car from the profile. The wheels are a bit depressed and the cantilevers are quite long. This can be a bit worrying, especially because the 2018 BMW Z5 must be excellent to succeed. The short wheelbase would mean that the 2018 BMW Z5 would feel more alive than before, but that would also involve some limitations. For starters, the engine may not be in an average forward position, which would not be ideal. In addition, the long overhangs could create an unusual design, but we’ll talk about it later. The car should be unveiled very soon and its price will be announced in the months to come. Like the Z4, the 2018 BMW Z5 will probably start around $ 50,000.
